The Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra meets world soloists Janine Jansen and Martin Fröst in a concert permeated by Nordic sounds. The world premiere of double concerto Distans by Sally Beamish, written for Jansen and Fröst, is interwoven with a string of works from Nordic musical history: Edvard Grieg’s Peer Gynt prelude, Jean Sibelius’ symphonic poem The Bard, and Carl Nielsen’s first symphony in G minor. Conductor Johannes Gustavsson leads the concert.
The concert will be broadcasted on Berwaldhallen Play and Swedish Radio P2 on May 21 at 7 pm.

The Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra is a multiple-award-winning ensemble renowned for its high artistic standard and stylistic breadth, as well as collaborations with the world’s finest composers, conductors, and soloists. It regularly tours all over Europe and the world and has an extensive and acclaimed recording catalogue.
Daniel Harding has been Music Director of the SRSO since 2007, and since 2019 also its Artistic Director. His tenure will last throughout the 2024/2025 season. Two of the orchestra’s former chief conductors, Herbert Blomstedt and Esa-Pekka Salonen, have since been named Conductors Laureate, and continue to perform regularly with the orchestra.
The Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra performs at Berwaldhallen, concert hall of the Swedish Radio, and is a cornerstone of Swedish public service broadcasting. Its concerts are heard weekly on the Swedish classical radio P2 and regularly on national public television SVT. Several concerts are also streamed on-demand on Berwaldhallen Play and broadcast globally through the EBU.
Johannes Gustavsson originally trained as a violist, his strong passion for conducting and excellent leadership skills led him to study conducting at the Norwegian Academy of Music with Ole Kristian Ruud and Olav Anton Thommessen, Jorma Panula and Simon Streatfield. Gustavsson works regularly with all major Nordic orchestras, being in demand as an interpreter of extensive symphonic and operatic repertoire. As a keen supporter of contemporary music, Gustavsson has conducted over 50 premiers of Nordic orchestral music.
Throughout his career, he has held senior conducting posts at the Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra, the Västerås Sinfonietta, the Nordic Chamber Orchestra, and was chief conductor at the Wermland Opera and at the Oulu Symphony Orchestra until 2021. Together with Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, Gustavsson has had a collaboration for over 20 years, resulting in over 30 concerts and a plethora of recordings.
Johannes Gustavsson has been a prizewinner at the Solti Conducting Competition in Frankfurt and the Toscanini Competition in Parma, and was the first artist to be awarded both the Swedish Conductor’s Prize and the Herbert Blomstedt Award.
Martin Fröst, klarinettist och dirigent, bördig från Uppsala och utbildad vid Kungliga Musikhögskolan och musikhögskolan i Hannover, är en av vår tids största musiker. Hans internationella renommé låter sig nästan inte beskrivas. En kritiker i New York Times menade att Martin Fröst äger ”en virtuositet och musikalitet som ingen annan klarinettist – kanske ingen annan instrumentalist – som jag kan påminna mig”. 2014 erhöll han Léonie Sonning Music Price. Namn ur listan över tidigare mottagare vittnar om prisets tyngd: Leonard Bernstein, Birgit Nilsson, Daniel Barenboim.
Genom åren har han gjort sig känd för att ständigt söka nya vägar inte bara för sitt eget musicerande, utan också genom att utmana gränserna för hur vi tar till oss klassisk musik och hur den klassiska musikarenan fungerar. Ett exempel är de bejublade temakonserterna med Kungliga Filharmonikerna; Dollhouse, Genesis, Retrotopia och Xodus (2013–2022), ett slags multimedieprojekt med musik, koreografi och ljusdesign, och där Martin Fröst framträdde både som klarinettist, dirigent, textförfattare och ”ceremonimästare”. Repertoaren spann genom hela världshistorien, från flertusenåriga notfragment till den allra senaste nutida musiken, vilket kan sägas vara typiskt för hur Martin Fröst fungerar som musiker. Det handlar om att fånga musikens innersta väsen, oavsett om det är klarinetten som är verktyget, eller dirigentpinnen, och oavsett från vilken tid musiken kommer.
Martin Fröst framträder numera både som dirigent och klarinettsolist – ibland i båda rollerna samtidigt, som när han framför Mozarts klarinettkonsert – med världens främsta orkestrar: Concertgebouworkestern i Amsterdam, New Yorks och Los Angeles filharmoniska orkestrar, Gewandhausorkestern i Leipzig, London Philharmonic, med många flera.
Sedan 2019 är han chefsdirigent för Svenska Kammarorkestern. Ett projekt har handlat om att under en fyraårsperiod göra turnéer (med tåg!) och följa Mozart i spåren på hans resor genom Europa. Han driver även stiftelsen Martin Fröst Foundation, med målet att ge barn och unga världen över utbildning i musik, tillgång till instrument och möjlighet att utveckla den klassiska konsertformen för framtida generationer.
Julia Kretz-Larsson is the assistant first concertmaster of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra since 2015. She is also a member of the chamber music ensemble Spectrum Concerts Berlin who, in addition to having their own concert series at the Berlin Phiharmonic, has performed at venues including Carnegie Hall in New York City and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. She is a former member of both the Lucerne Festival Orchestra and leader of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra.
She is also an active chamber musician, having performed with Janine Jansen, Isabelle Faust, Cecilia Zilliacus, Torleif Thedéen and others, and played at internationally renowned festivals in Salzburg, Utrecht and Schleswig-Holstein, as well as the Schubertiade in Voralberg and Vinterfest in Mora, Sweden. She has recorded chamber works for labels such as BIS, dB and Harmonia Mundi, and the 2018 album Amanda Maier vol. 3 was awarded a Swedish Grammy Award. As a member of the Julius Stern Piano Trio, she has won prizes at international competitions in Florence, Berlin and Trieste.
Julia Kretz-Larsson teacher violin at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. She is a Berlin native, has studied under Professor Marianne Boettcher, under Professor Thomas Brandis at the Berlin University of the Arts, and in Prague for Josef Suk.
