Daniel Harding has renewed his contract as Music Director of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra until the end of the 2022/23 season.  He has been its Music Director since 2007, following in the illustrious footsteps of Herbert Blomstedt, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Sergiu Celibidache.  The orchestra and Daniel Harding will embark on a major eleven-stop European tour in November, marking their special bond.

The sixteenth Baltic Sea Festival opens with Mahler’s 8th symphony and the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Daniel Harding. The year, the festival celebrates the centenary of the foundation of the Baltic states. The hit opera, Autumn Sonata, based on the film by Ingmar Bergman, is performed by the Finnish National Opera Choir and Orchestra. Acclaimed guest orchestras such as the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra, the Royal Swedish Orchestra and Sinfonietta Riga are also back. In addition, the festival presents the première of a new Swedish composition by Jesper Nordin. 

STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN, May 13, 2016 –– Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra – returning guests at the Baltic Sea Festival – this year offering Prokofiev. First, Symphony No. 3 in c minor as a summer evening's concert, and then the day after, family concert Peter and the Wolf narrated by actor Leif Andrée. For the 110 member Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra from Venezuela, this is their first time at the festival. The world renowned conductor Gustavo Dudamel, previously chief conductor of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, will lead his orchestra in a unique concert with compositions by Desanne, Villa-Lobos and Ravel.  

STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN March 14, 2016 – The 14:th Baltic Sea Festival will offer grand music, celebrated orchestras and spectacular artists from the whole Baltic Sea region. There will be classical orchestral works as well as a new, Swedish chamber opera with Tre Donne at the Royal Swedish Opera. Yuja Wang, currently one of the world’s most sought-after pianists, will perform works by Bartók and Messiaen. Polish Baltic Philharmonic and Riga Sinfonietta will be two other guests. The grand finale will be a grandiose opera feast – Esa-Pekka Salonen will conduct the Finnish National Opera orchestra in Strauss’ Elektra with Swedish soprano Nina Stemme in the title role.

The Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra with Kent Nagano recognises the 150:th anniversary of Nielsen and Sibelius. Tchaikovsky, whose 175:th anniversary is celebrated this year, is honoured with an orchestral version of the Nutcracker performed by the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra, conducted by Valery Gergiev. 

STOCKHOLM (26 March 2015) - Magnificent, symphonic music is set to dominate the thirteenth Baltic Sea Festival. Tjajkovskij, whose anniversary is one of the many celebrated this year, is honoured with an orchestral version of the Nutcracker performed by the Mariinskij Theatre Orchestra with conductor Valery Gergiev. The Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra with Kent Nagano recognises the 150thanniversary of Nielsen and Sibelius, but newer music also features with the Swedish premiere of Esa-Pekka Salonen’s Karawane. The festival this year also recognises the 80th anniversary of composer Arvo Pärt. Schönberg’s Gurrelieder performed by two symphony orchestras and four choirs provides a grand finish to the festival week. 

Stockholm/Sweden (April 10, 2014) — The twelfth Baltic Sea Festival offers a varied programme with a prominent youth-oriented profile. The Swedish National Youth Orchestra is back and children from El Sistema will play alongside the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. The festival will also recognise the 20th anniversary of the sinking of MS Estonia. Piano enthusiasts will have their own evening, featuring all of Prokofiev’s piano concertos. The Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra will make a tour-stop on their way to London. The programme for the Baltic Sea Festival was presented Monday at a press conference at Berwaldhallen in Stockholm.
