Estonia – eternal light
/ An audio walk which starts outside the Berwaldhallen entrance
Estonia – eternal light is an interactive and audiovisual choral work dedicated to the 852 people who lost their lives on September 28, 1994.
The work is site-specific and takes place along Djurgårdskanalen below Berwaldhallen. To take part in the work, you will need headphones and a smartphone. The experience starts outside Berwaldhallen and is approximately 15 minutes long.
At the center of Estonia – eternal light is Jaakko Mäntyjärvi’s choral work Canticum Calamitatis Maritimae, composed in memory of the Estonia victims. The song features, among other things, the text from Finland’s Rundradion’s news in Latin, Nuntii Latini, where they reported on the sinking of the Estonia.
Canticum Calamitatis Maritimae is performed here by the Helsinki Cathedral boys’ choir Cantores Minores, under the direction of Hannu Norjanen. The music is recorded and edited with surround technology, which means that the voices will be experienced as all around you.
Towards the end of the work, you will have the opportunity to write a personal greeting on your phone’s screen. The salute will go out over the Baltic Sea and lay like an eternal light over the place where M/S Estonia lies. Your greeting, your light, will, with the greetings of others, form a collective, virtual work of art above Estonia’s shipwreck.
Estonia – eternal light is launched at the Baltic Sea Festival, to a limited audience. Ahead of the 30th anniversary of the Estonia disaster. The experience will be available throughout Sweden, Finland and Estonia.
Estonia – eternal light is produced by Finland’s Rundradio Yle, in collaboration with Cantores Minores and DVA Creative Technology Studio, who have developed the visual and technical part of the piece.
WHEN?
The work will be published on Wednesday 28 August, and be available around the clock for those who wish to experience the walk on their own. On Friday, August 30 at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Swedish Yle Drama will organize a joint walk starting outside Berwaldhallen’s entrance.
