Echo of the Baltic Sea – dissonance and resonance in the marine environment

The Baltic Sea is exposed to significant stresses from human activity. Every day, around 2,000 ships ply the waterways. During the Baltic Sea Festival, an interactive installation created by researchers from KTH/Navet will be on display in the upper foyer of Berwaldhallen, aiming to increase awareness – and stir curiosity – about how ship traffic affects the Baltic Sea environment.

With the help of sound, so-called interactive sonification, different dimensions and how these develop over time are communicated. This feature makes it possible to visualise time variations based on complex information, such as thousands of ships in the Baltic Sea, as well as their characteristics and environmental impact.

On a sonified map, ship data is conveyed with both positive and negative feelings in relation to ship emissions. The installation offers two different ways to experience the environmental impact of traffic. You can either take part in an audiovisual recording of a (user) session, or alternatively, explore and navigate with your senses on an interactive map.
